Women killed as driverless ATV crashes in field near Red Bluff

RED BLUFF — Two women were killed Sunday afternoon when the all-terrain vehicle on which they were riding went out of control on a hill in Tehama County.

The two were passengers, along with a 3-year-old Redding girl, on a Polaris ATV being driven by a 77-year-old man on his property near Cottonwood, 12 miles south of Redding.

None of the four people were wearing safety restraints, according to a release issued Monday by the California Highway Patrol office in Red Bluff.

As the man drove down a hill, he lost control of the vehicle and was ejected. The driverless vehicle continued down the hill, hit a tree and overturned multiple times.

The women sustained fatal injuries. The girl had minor injuries and the man major injuries.

The women were identified only as a 57-year-old from Red Bluff and a 32-year-old from Redding.

It was the weekend’s second fatal accident in Tehama County. Shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday, a 58-year-old Red Bluff man on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle drove off Jellys Ferry Road and down a dirt embankment. He died at the scene. His passenger, a 59-year-old Red Bluff woman, sustained major injuries and was taken to a Redding hospital.
