SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — With spring officially here, the hum of mowers has started to fill the air.
However, the steps to take after you mow your lawn are important for motorists and the environment.
Denney’s Harley-Davidson operation manager Brian Stehle, says yard waste can turn their ride into a dangerous drive. Saying, the situation is very common and many motorcyclist have experienced it at least once before.
“Everyone would tell you, that it’s a pretty scary occurrence when it does happen, especially on a corner,” said Stehle. “We rely on our traction going around a corner and when there are grass clippings in the road. It’s almost like riding on glass, or riding on ice.”
Springfield’s Water Quality Compliance Officer, Carrie Lamb says disposing of yard waste properly is crucial. When people blow their grass clippings in the road, they often end up in storm drains, which can impact the quality of our streams, rivers and lakes.
“We’ve all seen lakes that are covered with algae, or streams, or rivers that are not very clear,” explained Lamb. “They might have kind of a green or just not a clear look to them. So, a lot of times that can be caused by excess nutrients from a lot of different sources, including fertilizer, grass clippings, and other yard waste that’s not disposed of properly.”
Placing leaves, grass clippings, yard waste in the streets is a Springfield city code violation.
