A Visalia man riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle in the wrong direction, lost control of his bike and crashed Sunday night.
Witnesses saw the man heading against traffic around 6:45 p.m. and called police just moments after the motorcyclist crashed in central Visalia. Callers told dispatchers there was a “motorcycle down in the roadway.”
The man was ejected from his motorcycle.
Officers arrived and discovered Daniel Renteria, 45, lying in the middle on the street on NE First Avenue, just north of Douglas Avenue.
Renteria suffered major injuries and was rushed to Kaweah Delta Medical Center. Officers didn’t release his condition.
Officers with Visalia’s Traffic Unit were called to investigate. Visalia’s Traffic Unit are motorcycle officers who specialize in investigating major injury and fatal crashes and collisions.
Officers believe Renteria was traveling the wrong way on NE First, near Visalia Rescue Mission, when he lost control of his 2004 Harley-Davidson. Officers didn’t release what model motorcycle the man was driving.
Police are investigating what caused Renteria to lose control of the motorcycle, Sgt. Mark Feller said.
Officers have not ruled out if speed, alcohol, or drugs were factors in the crash.
Renteria was wearing a half-helmet and other protective clothing.
Roads were closed in the area for hours while officers investigated and cleared the scene. If anyone has information call Visalia Police Department at 734-8116.
Last year, traffic officers investigated 484 injury collisions — 14 of those resulted in death.
