Labor Day weekend will rev up at Thunder Mountain Harley-Davidson in Loveland with Thunder in Rockies, an annual motorcycle rally that features live music, stunt shows, vendors and bikes. Lots of bikes.

“It’s something we are looking forward to being a part of,” said Luiza Obando, of Insane O Riders, a bike performance duo. It will be the first time Insane O Riders will make an appearance at the rally.

“This is motorcycle stunt show and they have been doing it for many years now at circuses, festivals, rallies, all sorts of events,” Obando said. Made up of two riders, John Obano and Leroy Ortiz, the Dallas, Texas, team rides in a steel cage. They perform several routines, including a light-up show with LED lights. John Obando has been doing the show for 10 years and is a third generation motorcycle stunt rider from Columbia, South America. Ortiz hails from California and has been with Insane O for over six years.

“These riders, they are family, I love working with them, I trust them, I love promoting them,” Luiza said. She used to be part of the show but now works to promote the pair and travels with them.

At motorcycle rallies “people get more pumped,” she said, adding that rallies draw a stronger reaction from the crowd than other types of events.

“It’s a really fun show,” she said.

Raising money for kids

Thunder in the Rockies is planned from Sept. 1-4. It features headlining musical acts such as Gary Allan, Texas Hippie Coalition and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts in the Thunder Mountain Amphitheater. The Grizzly Rose Tent will offer free music from bands such as Incognito and Guild of Ages. Stunt riding will be performed by Insane O as well as Busted Knuckles. Price varies for different events.

In the middle of all the music and stunts will be the Forever Family Ride, a charity motorcycle ride for the Northern Colorado non-profit Realties for Children.

Riders will gather at Thunder Mountain Harley-Davidson starting at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 3. Breakfast is included. The group will leave at 9 a.m. and head north in Interstate 25 to Laramie for a silent auction, live music from Doctor Doctor and Cook County Trio. Lunch will be provided by Dickey’s Barbecue Pit. The first 200 riders registered will get tickets to Joan Jett and the Blackhearts show that night.

“There is a huge investment in the cause and taking care of kids in our community in the motorcycle community,” said Joyce Dickens, director of events for Realities for Children. Each year the nonprofit teams up with Thunder in the Rockies for the Forever Family Ride to raise funds for their emergency fund. Realities for Children works with 31 Northern Colorado organizations to help neglected, abused, or at-risk youth.

“All of our funds are being distributed through those organizations,” Dickens said. In addition to an emergency fund, the nonprofit offers monthly youth activities to children who are involved with the groups they partner with, and host three distribution events: Back to School, Santa’s Workshop, and Bikes for Tykes.

“People aren’t there just to have fun, which we do, but to make a difference,” said Dickens. It will be Dickens’ first Family Forever Ride but she has organized one other bike rally for the nonprofit.

“It’s really neat to see so many people in one place that are really invested in the cause and making a difference. I really enjoy that,” she said.

Darryl Bootland of the Colorado Eagles will be the celebrity rider. VIP riders will get a meet and greet with the hockey player.

“I can not describe the feeling,” said Bootland. He did the ride last year as a participant and remembers coming off Crossroads Boulevard to join the hundreds of bike riders in front of him and the few hundred behind him.

“You get that many Harleys out there and you will never forget it,” he said.

Bootland has been a Harley rider in the past, owning one for a few years.

“It’s a great group of people,” he said of the motorcycle community. “A lot of them are Eagles fans, too.”

Bootland said he’s looking forward to meeting a few fans and getting to raise money for a good cause.

“I just think if you do have a bike or can get a bike, it’s something to experience,” he said.
