Thane Dennison held in fatal Phoenix motorcycle crash at 48th St., Baseline

A Phoenix man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after he was in a collision with a motorcycle that left one person seriously injured and another dead.

Thane Dennison, 28, was in his vehicle traveling east on Baseline Road around 6:30 p.m. Sunday night when he tried to turn left on 48th Street. Dennison failed to yield to oncoming traffic and turned in front of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle with two riders and crashed, according to a Maricopa County Superior Court document.

Both riders were taken to a hospital. The driver of the motorcycle died from his injuries, and the passenger had “multiple broken bones, a brain bleed, a collapsed lung and other internal bleeding,” the document showed.

Phoenix police found Dennison leaning against the wall on the phone. As an officer approached Dennison, they heard him say to the other person on the phone that he was going to jail, the document said.

The police officer smelled alcohol on Dennison’s breath while they talked. A search of his vehicle revealed empty beer cans and empty 1-ounce whiskey bottles on the floorboards, the document explained.

Dennison was taken to a hospital. There, an officer saw that Dennison had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. Dennison would not participate in sobriety tests and a search warrant for his blood was issued, the document said.

The blood tests showed that Dennison had a 0.20 blood-alcohol content level and a urine test was positive for cocaine. Police checked Dennison’s record and found he had currently had a revoked license, a prior DUI conviction, a reckless driving conviction and was involved in a hit-and-run in 2014, the document showed.

Dennison was arrested, and police are recommending he is charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault.

Dennison is being held on a $250,000 bond and is set to appear in court on March 11.
