PINEHURST, NC and IRVINE CA – Performance Brokerage Services in Irvine announces the sale of Sandhills Harley-Davidson of Pinehurst, NC, to the Cox family. Sandhills will operate under a new name, Cox’s Double Eagle Harley-Davidson, which reflects the golfing heritage of the region. The dealership will remain at its location in Pinehurst, and is undergoing a renovation.
Sandhills Cycle Center was founded in 1972 by Jimmy Melton, Sherril Lee and Charles Auman Jr., and would become a combination Harley-Davidson/Yamaha dealership. Auman left the business in 1988, leaving Melton as president and Lee as secretary. Melton was inducted into the Harley-Davidson Dealers Hall of Fame in 2003.
“After 45 years as a Harley-Davidson dealer, it was finally time to retire,” Melton said in a press release issued by Performance Brokerage Services. “George [Chaconas of Performance Brokerage Services] didn’t have the easiest job. This was a long and complicated process. None of this could be possible without his guidance and expertise.”
The Cox family established the first Cox’s Harley-Davidson in 1961 in Asheboro, NC. It opened a dealership in Rock Hill, SC, in 2004 and Cox’s Northern Tier Harley-Davidson in Mansfield, PA, in 2006. It sold the Pennsylvania dealership in 2015 to focus on the market in the Carolinas, Performance Brokerage Services said.
The brokerage added that Sandhills’ Yamaha franchise was sold to Jerry and Keith Covington at Sport Cycles of Rockingham, NC.
