San Jose: Two killed in separate accidents are identified

SAN JOSE — Two people killed in separate collisions just 20 minutes apart last week have been identified by the Santa Clara County coroner’s office.

Christine Herrera, a 43-year-old transient, was killed after she was hit by a 1999 Isuzu Rodeo while walking north on Little Orchard Street, near the Plant shopping center.

She was rushed to a hospital, where she died of her injuries, according to police.

The Isuzu driver, identified as 28-year-old San Jose resident Robert Allan Watts, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and possession of a controlled substance. Police said Watts showed “objective symptoms of narcotics use” in the wake of the deadly collision.

About 20 minutes after that crash, a motorcycle and big rig collided near North 10th and Hedding streets in North San Jose. The motorcyclist, 54-year-old John Hall of San Jose, lost control of his Harley Davidson and hit the big rig as they traveled in the same direction, according to police. Hall died a short time later at a local hospital.

The two deaths marked the city’s 45th and 46th traffic fatalities of the year. Anyone with information about either incident can contact the SJPD traffic investigations unit at 408-277-4654. Tips about the pedestrian case should be directed to Detective Troy Sirmons; tips about the motorcycle case should be sent to Detective Matt Templeman.
