There’s nothing quite as tantalizing as the scent of a shiny new car — unless it’s when the wind against a roaring Harley Davidson carries a whiff of freshly-mown grass and asphalt, or the mysterious scent of the river carries into the fishing boat, or in the dewy mix of woods and grass at twilight, just outside the family RV.

Beckley Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce is celebrating the wonders of a West Virginia summer this weekend with the area’s first Rides & Recreation Show at Crossroads Mall — a one-stop shop for buying a new automobile, RV, ATV or motorcycle — “anything on wheels,” as chamber Information Coordinator Joe Guffy said.

The show replaces the annual Business Show for 2018.

“We brainstormed to switch the business show up and do the business show every other year now,” explained event coordinator Kip Buchanan, sales director for the chamber. “In our area, there were really no new car shows.

“We kind of wanted to bring all the car dealers together in one show, under one roof.

“There will be boats there,” he added. “Hometown RV is bringing some boats.”

The Rides & Recreation Show promises to do just that, with area dealers coming together for an auto extravaganza.  Lewis Nissan Automotive, ATV Parts Plus, John Howerton Honda, L&S Toyota, Hometown Kia, Hometown Subaru, Hometown RV, Mountaineer Automotive, Crossroads Chevy, Sheets Chrysler Dodge and New River Gorge Harley-Davidson are among the participating vendors.

“It’s going to be a great event,” said Sarah Abrams of Lewis Nissan Automotive. “It gives local people a chance to get out and look at different things, check out different businesses, different automobiles and just support the community a little bit.

“They’ll also be able to get out and enjoy what looks to be a wonderful weekend.”

Kids can “go fish” in a little tank offered outside by Jan-Care, said Buchanan. Air Evac Lifeteam of Base 212 in Beckley is participating and may offer tours of a helicopter on Saturday, weather permitting.

Grown-ups can check out the RVs and cars parked outside and then head into the mall to see more vehicles. Gleaming Harley Davidson motorcycles, ATVs, side-by-sides and boats and find various businesses, including Innovative Insurance Solutions, Dixon Financial, United Bank of Beckley, City National Bank, Employers Innovative Network, U.S. Cellular and others.

Some businesses will have booths on the main floor, but even more businesses will offer services from a special “Business Showcase” inside the former Deb’s store.

When a shopper finds a special SUV or motorcycle, or an RV that feels like home, financing may be done on the spot.

“There’s something for everyone who comes out, inside and outside the mall this week,” Buchanan promised. “There will be things for men to do, women to do, children to do.”

The chamber and other businesses have donated door prizes, including a $60 helmet by ATV Parts Plus, camping packages by Jan-Care, gas cards, a tool set by CGC Construction, autographed John Maxwell books, gift baskets, gift credit cards, Sam’s Club membership card, free payroll services, a day/night package from Hampton Inn, Theatre West Virginia outdoor drama passes, a butcher block cutting board and Mary Kay cosmetics.

Rides & Recreation 2018 will be Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. at Crossroads Mall.
