Rebel Road expands, Muskegon Bike Time moves

MUSKEGON, MICH. – If you own a motorcycle or enjoy looking at them then Muskegon is the place to be Wednesday night to Sunday afternoon — not one, but two motorcycle events are kicking off.

It’s the third year Muskegon’s Bike Time and Rebel Road have been held on the same dates. This is the first year both events are being held entirely in downtown.

Bike Time is at the Hot Rod Harley Davidson dealership, after tribal property in Fruitport Township no longer was available.

“Because there are some very high level red tape Federal government kinds of things going on that I fully don’t understand,” said Tim Lipan, Muskegon Bike Time Spokesperson. That move puts Bike Time in Rebel Road’s back pocket.

“I think it will look like it has in years past where it went from the dealership all the way down here,” said Kyleen Gee, Executive Director Child Abuse Council.

This is the third year for Rebel Road on Western Avenue in Muskegon. In 2016 the event raised $ 39,000 for the Child Abuse Council.

“We serve over 21,000 kids every year here in Muskegon County,” siad Gee. “All of our services are free.”

Most of the money Rebel Road generates is from beer sales, and as a sign of cooperation, Bike Time choose not to sell beer.

“Bike Time was very respectful of that and said that they did not want to hinder that from us so they’re not having a beer tent,” said Gee.

Both events are good for local businesses. “It is just a lot of work,” said Gerald Britton, owner of Muskegon’s Big Round Sound. “We enjoy it.”

Rebel Road expanded and this year starts with family night. There’s free pony rides face painting, and music. Both events say they work hard to attract visitors to Muskegon.

Muskegon Bike Time was organized eleven years ago in an effort to plug a hole in Muskegon’s summer events calendar after the Muskegon Air Fair ended.

Bike Time and now Rebel Road have together grown to be the biggest events the city hosts.
