Questa man dies in motorcycle crash

– Staff report

A Questa man died after he lost control of his motorcycle on a curve on State Road 38 and crashed Wednesday night (June 6), according to the Taos County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officials believe motorcyclist, Brett Dally, 43, of Questa was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed within the village limits and was unable to make the curve in the roadway on his 2011 Harley Davidson. Based on evidence at the scene, law enforcement believe Dally drifted onto the highway shoulder and hit the south side guardrail, according to information in a press release from Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe. Dally was apparently ejected from the motorcycle when he hit the guardrail and landed about 300 feet away. He was not wearing a helmet and suffered severe injuries, according to the press release.

Fire and EMS units arrived prior to law enforcement and “did an outstanding job of securing and preserving the crash scene,” according to Hogrefe in the press release.

Questa Police Department also responded to the scene of the accident and then called at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday for assistance from the Taos County Sheriff’s Office.

The state Office of the Medical Investigator was called and will conduct an independent investigation of the accident, which will include the official cause of death and a toxicology report.

It was the second fatal crash on the highway involving a motorcyclist in less than three weeks, according to Taos County Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe. Neither of the motorcyclists were wearing helmets.
