Bryce Kane, of Oconto, a cancer survivor for more than five years, rode with Rick Vandervest as the 15th annual Jerry Parins “Cruise for Cancer” departed from Vandervest Harley-Davidson on June 9.
More than 400 riders and passengers participated, raising more than $120,000, which will be donated to local hospitals and cancer foundations.
The ride stopped at Copperfest in Oconto for lunch and ended back at Vandervest’s banquet facility, where numerous bucket raffles and a live auction took place. Members of the Packerland Harley’s Owner Group volunteered their time to help run the event along with Packers personnel.
Food was supplied by Festival Foods, Stodola’s IGA, LaJava and Pepsi Cola, with all proceeds being donated to the Jerry Parins “Cruise for Cancer” Foundation.
Parins, a former Green Bay Police captain who became director of corporate security for the Green Bay Packers in 1992, was diagnosed with cancer in 2003. A long-time motorcyclist, Parins coordinated the first ride 16 months later. The event has raised more than $1.5 million.
Five military veterans and one active duty soldier from Suring participated in a skydiving experience last month.
The veterans, from left, are Zach School, Earl School, Rich School (all Marine Corps), and Doug Klismet (Army). Not pictured was Eric Berg (Marines). In front is Steve Westphal, who is still in the service.
All are members of Harold C. Anderson American Legion Post 283, Suring.
The trip was coordinated by Westphal, who is vice president of the “4th Helping Out Our American Heroes” (HOOAH), which pays for the annual outing. The parachuting service was provided by Seven Hills Skydivers, Madison.
