New Ulm motorcyclist severely injured in Highway 23 crash near Clara City


CLARA CITY — A motorcyclist suffered life-threatening injuries in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 23 northeast of Clara City, which closed the highway for a portion of time on Wednesday.

Craig Michael Lund, 48, of New Ulm, who was driving a 2016 Harley Davidson FLHX, was taken to St. Cloud Hospital. He was not wearing a helmet, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Also injured in the crash was Paulette Frances Kortgard, 72, of Clara City. She reportedly has non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. She was wearing a seat belt.

Alcohol was not involved in the crash, the state patrol said.

According to the state patrol crash report, around 2:37 p.m. Wednesday the Harley Davidson was traveling southbound on Highway 23 at County Road 1. A Dodge Caravan, driven by Kortgard, was making a right hand turn onto Highway 23 from County Road 1. The two vehicles collided, the report said.

Assisting at the scene were the Raymond Ambulance, LifeLink Aircare, Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office, Clara City Fire Department, Clara City Ambulance, the Minnesota Department of Transportation and the Minnesota State Patrol.
