Motorcyclist hospitalized after avoiding vehicle crash (w/video)

A motorcyclist was taken to a hospital after he went off the road Monday evening.

Robert Douglas, 43, of Victoria, was driving a 2017 Harley-Davidson Street about 6:15 p.m. in the outside lane of the 4500 block of Port Lavaca Drive, said patrol officer Lee Peters, of the Victoria Police Department.

Douglas applied his brakes to avoid being struck by a black sedan making an unsafe turn, Peters said.

The sedan was turning left onto Port Lavaca Drive from the U.S. 59 feeder road when Douglas avoided the crash. The sedan’s driver didn’t stop to offer assistance, Peters said.

“No citations were issued,” he said. “This was not a hit-and-run (because they) never came in contact with each other.”

Douglas was transported to Citizens Medical Center with minor injuries, Peters said. He had road rash, scrapes and bruises.

David Ramirez, 20, of Victoria, and Francisco Vargas, 23, of Victoria, were headed home from working at Formosa when they saw Douglas lying in the grass.

They stopped to assist him and called 911. Douglas was conscious and breathing when the two helped him.

“We called his wife” Ramirez said. “He said he was OK. His knees were hurting, and (he) had pain in his arms.”
