Motorcyclist and war veteran honored with a new Harley

STURGIS, S.D. (KOTA TV) – It’s hard to keep a secret sometimes, but that’s what people did at the Sturgis Rally Tuesday.

The surprise was perpetrated by Harley-Davidson, the Wounded Warrior Project and “Scootin’ America.”

It was part of a cross-country project called, Mission: Thank You.

Nominations were taken for current or past military members who dedicated their lives to serving others. Eight winners would be chosen nationally, each awarded a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

One of the bikes was awarded today in Sturgis to a surprised winner.

“Incredible; I wasn’t expecting this,” war veteran Charles Swank said. “It’s a fantastic gift. I can’t thank everybody enough.”

Swank enlisted in the Army on Sept. 11, 2001, and eventually deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. He earned a Bronze Star for helping one his wounded comrades during a firefight.

Swank is now a firefighter in Ohio.
