LAGRANGE COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – A Topeka man was hospitalized Tuesday after his Harley Davidson was struck by a semi along State Road 5.
Police and medics were called just before 6 p.m. to S.R. 5 south of C.R. 600 South on a report of a crash. There, officers found a semi had crashed into a motorcycle, and the motorcyclist had been thrown.
The victim – 59-year-old Randel Hallgarth of Topeka – was airlifted from the scene with a dislocated shoulder along with ankle pain and numerous scrapes and bruises, police said.
Investigators believe Hallgarth was headed north on S.R. 5 when he signaled to turn west onto C.R. 600 South. A 1999 Freightliner tractor-trailer driven by Adnan Zyteja, 57, of Machesney Park, Illinois, was traveling behind him and did not see the slowing motorcycle, police said.
The semi swerved into the left oncoming lane and drove passed the motorcyclist, but the Harley clipped the rear tires of the semi, police said.
Zyteja was taken to a nearby hospital for a blood test, police said.
