MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) –

The driver of a motorcycle is dead after a hit-and-run crash on Maui early Saturday morning.

Maui police say it happened just after 1:45 a.m. at the intersection of Piilani Highway and Kulanihakoi Street in Kihei.

A 29-year-old man was driving a 2018 Harley Davidson motorcycle southbound on Piilani Highway when he collided into a white 2006 Acura TSX 4-door sedan.

Police say the driver of the sedan failed to yield while making a left turn onto the highway from Kulanihakoi Street.

The driver of the motorcycle was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

His family has been notified and he has been identified as Michael Ben Wezalis of Kihei.

The driver and passenger of the Acura fled the scene on foot. Maui police have not yet reported any arrests in connection with the crash.

"The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing," Maui police said.

This is Maui County’s 6th traffic fatality for 2018 compared to four this same time last year.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.
