Man on Harley hits deer near Sturgis, is killed

A 39-year-old man hit a deer Sunday while riding a motorcycle northeast of Sturgis near Bear Butte.

He was southbound on state Highway 79 on a 2004 Harley Davidson FLHTCI Electra Glide Classic about 3 p.m., Sunday, May 13, when a deer entered the roadway and collided with the bike, according to Tony Mangan, spokesman for the Highway Patrol.

The man was thrown from the motorcycle when it was overturned. He was not wearing a helmet and was pronounced dead at the scene, about eight miles northeast of Sturgis, just northwest of Bear Butte, just south of Spring Creek, according to the report.

His name was not released Monday, pending notification of relatives.

No one else was involved in the crash.
