ABINGDON, Va.—A man was killed Friday morning in a motorcycle crash in Washington County, Virginia.

The Virginia State Police said the crash occurred at 10:25 a.m. on U.S. Highway 58, almost two miles east of where U.S. Highway 58 and state Route 91 split. Police said a 2012 Harley-Davidson motorcycle was traveling east on Highway 58 when it suddenly ran off the right side of the highway.

The rider, Christopher M. Lawson, 38, of Abingdon, died at the scene, police said. He was wearing a helmet.

A second crash occurred just moments later when another eastbound motorcycle swerved to miss the crashed Harley-Davidson, police said. The second motorcycle ran off the right side of the road and into a creek. The operator suffered minor injuries, but his adult female passenger was flown to Bristol Regional Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.

The couple in the second crash is from Ohio and both were wearing helmets. The crashes remain under investigation.
