Library hosts Touch a Truck

Dodge City Public Library

Most of the time, the parking lot behind the Dodge City Public Library is usually vacant or occupied by loading trucks. On Wednesday afternoon, however, the parking lot was filled with EMS vehicles, motorcycles and plenty of excited children.

“We’ve invited various community groups with interesting vehicles to come to our event Touch a Truck,” said youth services librarian Rozanna Bennett. “That way the children can look at, touch and sit in or on the vehicles,”

Vehicles that were present on Wednesday included a firetruck from the Dodge City Fire Department, a police car from the Dodge City Police Department, two ambulances from Ford County EMS, a variety of city vehicles and three motorcycles from the local Harley Davidson shop.

According to Bennett, the library hosted this event as a part of their summer reading program.

“Our summer reading theme this year is ‘Build a Better World’,” said Bennett. “One of the ways to do this is to be an active member in the community.”

During this program, the kids were encouraged to visit all vehicles in the parking lot where the vehicle representative would explain what each piece of equipment is used for.

“This is a fun way to introduce children to various community groups,” said Bennett. “It’s also a great way for the kids to see how many different avenues there are to serve the community.”

The library will host many more events throughout the rest of summer as a part of their summer reading program. For more information, visit the DCPL website at
