LEESBURG – Area law enforcement agencies spread out across Lake County Thursday to get unwanted guns off the streets.
The annual event, dubbed Kicks 4 Guns, was started 19 years ago to give area residents a way to turn in unwanted firearms safely so they don’t fall into the hands of criminals.
Thursday’s event, sponsored by Crimeline and Real Radio, is held each year around the time school starts. Gun owners are allowed to turn in weapons anonymously and with no questions asked. In exchange for the gun, citizens receive gift cards, which are redeemable for shoes or other merchandise of their choosing at Walmart.
Since the inception of the program, approximately 10,000 unwanted guns have been collected across Central Florida.
Leesburg and Fruitland Park police held their buyback event at Gator Harley-Davidson on U.S. Highway 441 in Leesburg. Clermont police were at Stormy Hill Harley-Davidson in Clermont and Eustis, Mount Dora, Tavares and Umatilla police joined the Lake County Sheriff’s Office at 15519 U.S. Highway 441.
