J&L Harley Davidson unveils commemorative USS South Dakota motorcycle

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KSFY) – Over the past week, an American flag has been carried across the state of South Dakota to commemorate the upcoming christening of the new USS South Dakota Submarine.

The flag made its way to Sioux Falls on Sunday, and an exciting unveiling took place on Monday.

A commemorative 2018 Harley Davidson Street Glide was unveiled at J&L Harley Davidson. The bike was donated by the Harley Davidson Motor Company to help celebrate the new submarine and the state’s motorcycle heritage.

Parts for the bike were donated by J&L Harley Davidson, and the painting was done by local artist Mickey Harris.

Members of the commissioning committee hope this bike will tie the crew on the submarine to South Dakota.

“A key to the motorcycle will be on board the submarine, and for the next 30 years any sailor that’s attached to the USS South Dakota can come back to our state, check the motorcycle out of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museaum, and ride it around the state of South Dakota,” Tom Muester said.

The USS South Dakota will be commissioned in Groton, Connecticut on October 14.
