Hot August Blues
There is a new excitement as the 28th Annual Kenlake Hot August Blues Festival is set for August 24th through 26th at Kenlake State Resort Park in Aurora, Kentucky. The annual event has always been held the weekend before Labor Day Weekend at the state park. This year, the festival is under new management, as 61 South Entertainment takes over all aspects of booking and promotion.
“The previous promoter made some improvements to the event when they took it over, after the park staff was not able to run it anymore. That included upgrading the stage, lights and sound for the event, and quite frankly, if it had not been for the previous promoter, who knows if they would have even had a festival at all,” according to Lew Jetton, of 61 South Entertainment. “Our goal is to take it from there, and upgrade it to the next level, with nationally known touring acts, and an overall better blues festival experience.”
First of all, that means an renewed emphasis on Blues Music. This year’s lineup features several nationally known names, including at least one crowd favorite who will be returning to the festival after a long absence.
The festival begins Thursday night at Kenlake State Resort Park Lodge with the traditional free performance on the lawn, featuring local favorites Adam and the H-Bombs, along with Scalehound. Scalehound has Western Kentucky roots, although they have performed several times at Bonaroo, and opened for such roots music greats as The Drive By Truckers, Blackberry Smoke, and many more.
The lineups for Friday and Saturday will be announced soon, although in all there will be 14 bands. The festival moves to the amphitheater Friday with gates opening at 4PM and music starting at 6. Saturday, gates open at 10AM with music starting at noon. For more information, including ticket information, log onto kenlakeblues.com
The festival will feature several well known area food vendors and in case of rain, a full stage will be set up inside the huge, indoor tennis center, ready for the show, just in case.
Corporate sponsors for the festival already include Peppers Automotive Group, Aurora Electrical and Storage, Abernathy’s Harley Davidson, The Kentucky Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau, Kenlake State Resort Park, Harper Guitars, and ExporeKentuckyLake.com, Willie 102.1, DXR 102.5 and NewsTalk 94.3, although there is still room for additional sponsors.
