A Hawthorn Woods man driving a motorcycle was charged with DUI after he crashed and was ejected, leaving him in critical condition near Hebron Tuesday evening.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Hebron-Alden-Greenwood Fire Protection District responded around 6:56 p.m. Tuesday for a single-vehicle motorcycle crash on Johnson Road north of Route 173.

Sheriff’s deputies found a 2018 Harley Davidson motorcycle, driven by Jeff Koszuta, 52, of Hawthorn Woods, in the roadway.

The motorcycle had been traveling southbound on Johnson Road when it left the roadway to the west and crashed after re-entering the roadway.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said that Koszuta was the driver and sole rider on the motorcycle. He was ejected and sustained serious injuries.

One of Mercyhealth’s emergency field vehicles — called MD-1 — was called to the scene to help treat him.

MD-1 vehicles are staffed by residency-trained emergency medicine physicians and they can help paramedics stabilize a patient before they are transported to the hospital from a scene.

Koszuta was flown by a LifeNet medical helicopter to Javon Bea Hospital-Riverside in Rockford where he is listed in critical condition.

The sheriff’s office said that Koszuta was not wearing a helmet and the investigation also revealed Koszuta was operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

Koszuta was cited for driving under the influence of alcohol and failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

The investigation into the crash continues by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit.
