'Harley hearse' turns heads at Lehner funeral

More than a few heads were turned Wednesday by the Harley Davidson Tri-Glide and its custom-built hearse coach used during the funeral of Buffalo Police Officer Craig E. Lehner.

The unusual transport was chosen by Lehner’s mother, Kathleen, said executives at Lakeside Memorial Funeral Home, where a prayer service for Lehner was held Wednesday morning.

“His mom requested the Harley hearse,” said Charles A. Castiglia, the president of Lakeside. “I guess his mother and father used to ride.”

The customized hearse is used about 30 times a year, said Castiglia, whose son rode the Tri-Glide that pulled it.

“It’s not like riding a regular motorcycle,” said Castiglia. “The trailer and casket weigh about 1,000 pounds. It’s mainly used for veterans.”
