A beloved motorcycle company is one step closer to having a Salisbury store.

The Salisbury-Wicomico County Planning and Zoning Commission met Thursday to approve a new space for Rommel Harley-Davidson.

After a unanimous vote, the company got approval to move into the space formerly occupied by Gander Mountain in the Maryland Square Shopping Center. Gander Mountain closed in August 2017.

The Salisbury location would add to a number of stores that include Rommel Harley-Davidson in Seaford as well as Smyrna, Delaware. The group also owns a store in Annapolis.

The new Harley-Davidson store in Salisbury would take up about one-third of the current building, partitioned off with a wall. That would leave space for other potential businesses to also move into the building, although no specifics were discussed at the zoning meeting Thursday.

One of the more notable additions to the building would potentially be a silo emblazoned with the Harley-Davidson logo, a structure that wouldn’t offer any storage but would serve as an important and iconic reminder that the store is there.

The change from Gander Mountain to a Harley-Davidson would not change any access points to the shopping center.

Members of the Planning and Zoning Commission expressed concern about potential noise, noting that with other tenants might not produce as much noise as a motorcycle store.

The owner of the new store told the commission that on an average day, noise would likely only be the result of the service team testing motorcycles after working on them.

Another concern might come from events at the store. Those presenting to the commission said that while events were important to the store, they would not do anything beyond what was limited by the city, including getting permits when necessary.
