A pair of Harley Davidson riders collided when one broke sharply and was rear-ended by the other, who then died.
The incident on Hwy. 210 in Crow Wing County, east of the Brainerd Lakes area, happened at 7:33 p.m. on Friday evening near the intersection with County Road 12.
It led to the death of 55-year-old Frank Westerlund, of Grand Rapids, who was riding a Harley Davidson Road Glide behind his fellow Harley owner, a 63-year-old man also from Grand Rapids.
The 63 year old, who was riding a Harley Road Street, braked hard while eastbound on 210 and was rear-ended by Westerlund, who died as a result of the crash.
Both riders had alcohol involved in their system when the crash happened, the Minnesota State Patrol said.
It was one of two fatal, alcohol-involved crashes reported in Minnesota Friday evening.
The other happened at Hwy. 4 and County Road 16 in Meeker County, when a westbound Dodge Caravan driven by a man who had consumed alcohol ran a stop sign and was hit by a southbound semi truck.
One of the passengers, 57-year-old Steven Schmidt, of Atwater, died in the collision. He was the only person out of three in the vehicle not wearing a seatbelt, the State Patrol notes.
