Grand jury hands down 181 indictments in Henry County

COLLINSVILLE – A Henry County grand jury returned 181 indictments Monday, including a charge of involuntary manslaughter-DUI related.

The grand jury indicted William Arthur Shipwash, 57, of Eden, North Carolina, on that charge as well as a charge of DUI-first offense.

An indictment is not an indication of guilty. It is a grand jury’s determination that enough evidence exists to hold a trial.

Shipwash was charged in connection with a traffic accident in Axton on June 11, 2017, from which Tommy Matherly, 61, of Martinsville, died.

The incident happened at 1:45 p.m. on Route 610, near the intersection with Route 1043.

A 2016 Honda Accord driven by Shipwash was heading south on Route 610 when the vehicle ran off the right side of the road.

According to the report from the Virginia State Police, the driver overcorrected, crossing the center line of the road and hitting a 2000 Harley Davidson motorcycle, which was heading in the opposite direction.

The Harley Davidson was driven by Matherly, who later died June 11, 2017, from injuries received in the crash. Shipwash was taken to Memorial Hospital to be treated for injuries received in the crash.
