French citizen who ran over motorcyclist sentenced to prison

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — A French citizen who was high on methamphetamine when he fatally struck a California motorcyclist while driving a big rig has been sentenced.

The Fresno Bee reports Nicolas Laurent Appert was sentenced Friday to 12 years and four months in prison for killing Eric Leoni. Appert will be deported back to France after he serves his prison sentence.

Appert, who was living in San Francisco at the time on a student visa, had no prior criminal record.

Leoni was killed April 24 while driving his Harley-Davidson to work.

Authorities say Leoni was stopped for a red light on eastbound Mount Whitney at Highway 41 when his Harley-Davidson was struck from behind by Appert, who was driving a stolen Freightliner truck.

In a letter, Appert told Leoni’s family he was sorry.
