Fatal crash and DUI near collision handled by CHP – San Andreas

A Lodi man died in West Point on Friday and a Ripon man was arrested on driving under the influence charges after causing an accident that resulted in major injuries Saturday in Angels Camp.

About 5:30 p.m. Friday, a Ripon man was driving a 1998 Mazda eastbound on Winton Road near Robinville Drive in West Point at a high rate of speed, a CHP news release stated. The man lost control of the vehicle around a curve in the road and ran into a tree after leaving the road.

The driver was not wearing a seatbelt, and authorities suspect drugs or alcohol may have been factors in the crash.

Christopher Murray, 51, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The collision remains under investigation.
On Saturday, a Ripon man driving a 2002 Ford pickup and hauling a boat trailer allowed his vehicle to cross over the double-yellow centerline on Highway 4 west of Hunt Road, causing multiple near-collisions that led to the hospitalization of five people.

The man approached a procession of vehicles: a 2008 Harley-Davidson motorcycle carrying a Castro Valley couple and a Harley-Davidson motorcycle carrying a second Castro Valley couple followed by a Mountain House man in a 2013 Mini-Cooper and a Mountain House woman in a 2014 Honda sedan.

When the Ripon man’s vehicle crossed over the double-yellow lines, the drivers and passengers of both motorcycles were forced to take evasive action to avoid a collision. All four riders were ejected into the road.

The 2002 Ford pickup with the boat trailer continued to travel westbound in the eastbound lane, forcing the driver of the 2013 Mini Cooper to apply his brakes to avoid a collision. The driver of the 2014 Honda did not have enough time to react to the 2013 Mini Cooper braking and collided with the rear of the Mini Cooper.

The Ford pickup with the boat trailer avoided both drivers and came to a stop on the north shoulder of Highway 4.

CHP officers arrested the driver of the Ford, David Michael Barnett, 47, of Ripon, on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The four passengers of the respective motorcycles, Victor Anthony Law, 61, Catherine Law, 57 and Christopher Caison, 56, Debra Caison, 54, all of Castro Valley, were transferred to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto for treatment of major injuries.

Michael Jayne, 47, of Mountain House, driver of the 2013 Mini Cooper, was uninjured, but Karyn McQueen, 34, of Mountain House, was transferred to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto for treatment of minor injuries.

The collision remains under investigation.
