Harley-Davidson has released the all-important local pricing and availability of the electric LiveWire.

The sticker price will kick off at $53,995 which is a lot but you do get quite a bit for your cash.

For instance, instead of buying a manual Mazda MX-5 RF, you could have a bike that hits 100kmh in three seconds and produces no emissions. A claimed urban range of 235km is within normal distance parameters for motorbikes, although 152 km of combined stop-and-go and highway range is somewhat on the low side.

When Stuff spoke to Chris Elles of Rolling Thunder Harley-Davidson in Christchurch, he indicated LiveWire will have a range similar to a Sportster equipped with a peanut tank on the highway or a standard Softail around town.

Charging the 15.5kWh battery pack from 20 to 100 per cent should take around 40 minutes while complete rejuicing should be done in an hour. This is on a Level 3 fast charger, standard home chargers should fill the battery from zero to 100 overnight.

Rolling Thunder Harley-Davidson in Christchurch was the first New Zealand dealer to take delivery of the all-electric LiveWire back in February. Just the one unit has landed so far, destined to remain a show bike until the model launches in proper this September.

If you’re interested in the LiveWire but aren’t sure of its overall capabilities (and aren’t in Christchurch to see for yourself), be sure to check out the Long Way Up, Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman’s latest expedition.

Following the BMW 1200 GS-powered Long Way Down and Long Way Around, Long Way Up sees the pair ride modified LiveWires from Patagonia in Argentina through South America to California in the United States.

And if you’d rather a new Harley powered by dino juice that isn’t a cruiser, keep your eyes peeled for the Bronx streetfighter and Pan America adventure tourer.

Both are based on the new Revolution Max engine platform, coming in 975cc and 1250cc forms and should debut late this year or early next. The new engine is unrelated to the Milwaukee series and the 975kW version will apparently make “more than 85kW” and over 94Nm of twist.

The American manufacturer is also reportedly working on a sports bike to take on the likes of Ducati over in Europe, though that one remains firmly in the rumour mill for now.
