Despite the intense summer heat, local motorcyclists took to the road Sunday morning full of Christmas spirit.

The 49th Aerie of the Fraternal Order of Eagles hosted their third annual Christmas in July Poker Run and raised $ 200 to help families in need.

Around 20 people met at the Eagles’ lodge on North Belt Highway and paid $ 10 each to ride 120 miles from St. Joseph to Rulo, Nebraska, and back.

Ten motorcycles and one Corvette made the trip, collecting playing cards along the way, according to organizer Rodney Sears.

“They get a card at each stop and when we get back here, whoever has the best hand wins,” Sears said.

He said prizes, such as a Harley Davidson figurine, were given to winners.

The money goes into an account that is used for the Eagles’ Adopt a Family event in December, which helps families pay for presents around the holidays.

“If we raise $ 10, fine, if we raise a $ 100, fine. I just like helping out at Christmas time,” Sears said.

The Aerie typically raises anywhere from $ 2,000 to $ 3,000 dollars a year for Adopt a Family through various events and donations and plans on adopting three to five families this year.

Sears said he knows what it is like to be low on money around Christmas, and that is why he helps.

“Some people just really can’t afford things at Christmas time,” Sears said. “I mean, if they’re a single parent trying to raise a kid and, you know, and working all the time, it’s hard. I’ve been there and it’s why I like doing it.”
