Daredevil flies over snakes, sticks landing

STURGIS | While organizers of daredevil Doug Danger’s latest stunt at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip attracted only two rattlesnakes for the stuntman’s Thursday evening jump, Danger delivered by soaring more than 120 feet, landing on an 8-foot-wide ramp with room to spare.

Wearing a replica red, white and blue outfit first worn by famed motorcycle stuntman Evel Knievel on his Snake River leap, Danger told a crowd of about 2,000 that his jump was as much about safely landing the 1972 Harley-Davidson XR750 as it was about overcoming personal demons.

“I gave my word I’m going to go, and I’m going to go,” the 55-year-old veteran stuntman said prior to his leap. “Somebody have a cold beer waiting for me on the other side.”

With that, and a push start, Danger set his sights on hitting the take-off ramp at precisely 74 mph, soaring 30 feet in the air and planting the vintage Harley on the narrow landing pad. As performed, Danger soared well past the two serpents, hitting the landing point at least 20 feet beyond its leading edge.

“When I saw where I was coming down, I said to myself, `This is going to hurt,’” Danger said moments after completing the stunt. “It was a hard landing, and it knocked the wind out of me.”

Glancing at a Plexiglas case holding the rattlers, which he hates, a smiling Danger said he was happy to have finished the performance and still be walking.

“Thanks to the rattlesnakes,” he said. “I think I’m going to have a new pair of boots.”
