A benefit bike ride has been set to help a paralyzed crash victim raise funds for a specialized physical therapy program in Atlanta.

Tony Polk is trying to raise enough money to send his granddaughter, Nyoka Skye Myers, 17, to the Shepherd’s Center, a private, nonprofit hospital specializing in medical treatment, research and rehabilitation for people with injuries of the spinal cord and brain.

On Dec. 31, 2016, Myers, a South Stanly High School graduate, suffered a broken neck in a single-car crash while returning from a New Year’s Eve gathering. She was thrown from an overturned vehicle that was speeding in a hairpin turn on Five Points Road near Locust.

Polk’s charity ride will take place Sept. 23 at 4438 Old Davis Road in Norwood. Bikes depart at 10:30 a.m. and return around 6 p.m., where live music by Inland Creek Band and others awaits.

There will be drawings for prizes from various motorcycle dealers, including Old Skool Kustom in Marshville, Iron Horse Motorcycles in Monroe, Charlotte Harley-Davidson, Speedway Harley-Davidson, Morton Custom Cycles, both of Concord, and American Classic Motorcycle Museum in Asheboro.

Plenty of camping space is available for bikers arriving the day before and/or remaining the day after the scheduled ride.

Anyone under the age of 21 must be accompanied by a guardian.

There is a $ 20 fee per bike for the ride.
