Ronald McDonald House run, Zumbathon, VFW event part of schedule

1. VFW to host POW/MIA ceremony

VFW Post No. 7315 in Havelock has scheduled a POW/MIA Recognition Day ceremony at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Lunch will follow the ceremony with proceeds going to support the veterans relief fund.

The Havelock VFW is located at 120 Lynnwayne Circle.

2. Run for Ronald McDonald House

The Run for Ronald McDonald House is scheduled for 8 a.m. Saturday at Havelock City Park.

Proceeds from the 5K run/walk event benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Eastern North Carolina, where families are able to stay for free while their children are being treated at the children’s hospital at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. More than 700 families per year stay at the home.

3. Zumbathon fundraiser

The Havelock Police Department has scheduled its annual Zumbathon charity event from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the Havelock Recreation Center.

The Dance It Up Purple event raises money for the Coastal Women’s Shelter, which supports victims of domestic violence in Craven, Pamlico and Jones counties.

The cost is $ 10 in advance and $ 15 at the door. It includes refreshments, door prizes and raffle prizes. The first 50 people will receive a free gift.

Tickets are available at the Havelock Recreation Center or the Coastal Women’s Shelter in New Bern.

4. Lanterns on the Lawn

Lanterns on the Lawn is scheduled for the Tryon Palace South Lawn on Saturday and Sunday in New Bern.

Reservation includes 15-foot-by-15-foot campsite, dinner buffet of hamburgers, hot dogs, and s’mores, historical interpreters, crafts, bouncy houses, and backyard games. Also available will be campfire sing-a-longs and moonlit garden walks. A sunrise yoga session overlooking the Trent River and a breakfast buffet is planned for Sunday.

The cost is $ 60 for a camp site up to four people and $ 100 for five to eight people. Children age 5 and under are admitted free. Discounts of $ 10 are available for Palace Foundation Members.

5. VFW benefit ride

The Dixon-Conderman VFW Post 2514 will host a benefit ride Saturday to offer additional scholarship grants for those veterans enrolled in the Workforce Development Programs.

The ride is open for those with cars or motorcycles, and the entry fee is $ 25 for the rider and $ 10 per passenger.

The event, weather permitting, will begin from 10 to 10:30 a.m. at the New Bern Harley Davidson shop on U.S. 70 in the James City community. The 50-plus-mile ride concludes at the VFW Post 2514, off Old Cherry Point Road., at the end of Mt. Pleasant Road., located at 3850 Butler Road. There will be door prizes, along with barbecue ribs and other food from 2 to 4 p.m. Musician Bobby Huff and friends will provide live entertainment. There will also be a cash bar.
