Alleged motorcycle thief caught hiding in trash can

Redding police officers arrested a man Monday morning on suspicion of stealing a motorcycle after a police dog found him hiding in a trash can.

Officers received a call about a suspicious man lurking outside the Kutras Gardens Apartments at 540 South St. The caller said the man appeared to have a rifle and was on foot, later reporting hearing a motorcycle leave the apartment complex.

The owner of the motorcycle called a few minutes later to report the theft of his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

The suspect was spotted on the motorcycle, but refused to stop for police, leading them on a short pursuit. He abandoned the Harley in the 2700 block of Wyndham Lane in south Redding and ran.

A resident reported she heard the suspect run through her backyard, and after a search of the area, police K-9 Njord found Cory Ray Arguello, 25, of Oroville, hiding in trash can, investigators said.

Arguello also was arrested on suspicion of evading officers.

He had other outstanding arrest warrants for vehicle theft and possession of stolen property, police said.

The news release did not say if Arguello had a rifle.
