2 Good Samaritans killed while trying to help motorcycle driver

3 people are dead and two others are recovering following a four vehicle crash in Midland County.

The crash happened Sunday night around 8:40 p.m. on Business 20, about two and half miles west of Midland.

DPS Troopers tell us a preliminary investigation showed that a 1995 Harley Davidson and a 2012 Dodge Ram pickup truck were traveling west in the outside lane of Business 20.

At some point officials said, the Harley Davidson, which was behind the Dodge Ram, struck the pickup from behind.

We’re told that once the two vehicles collided, a 2014 Ford F-150 pickup truck stopped in the center median to render aid to the motorcycle driver that was laying in the inside lane of Business 20.

According to the report, that’s when, a 2012 Harley Davidson, also traveling west in the inside lane struck the three pedestrians that stopped to render aid to the motorcycle driver.

The driver of the 1995 Harley Davidson, Erick G. Benavides, 23, of Odessa, died on the scene. Two of the pedestrians who stopped to help Benavides, Augustin Gomez, 60, of Odessa, and Joshua Brown, 25, of Maricopa, AZ, died from the crash.

Troopers said the driver of the 2012 Harley Davidson, Josh Benavides, 45, of Odessa, was also taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Authorities added that a third person who got out to render aid, Janice Young, 25, of Maricopa, AZ, was taken to Midland Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
